Internships

The Luminary has a year-round internship program that attracts some of the most talented and innovative people in the region to help in areas as diverse as curating exhibits, booking concerts, marketing and PR, and graphic/web design. We are interested in people with ambition and see the program as an incubator for new ideas, a place to train creative talent and an opportunity to empower young leaders.

Internship positions and job descriptions are listed below:

Media: The media intern will be responsible for documenting and archiving The Luminary’s programs and events. The internship will provide an opportunity to develop skills relating to event and artistic documentation and high-profile opportunities to publish work. Applicants should have experience with digital photography and video and a basic knowledge of editing software.

Curatorial: The curatorial intern will assist the staff with the research, preparation and install of exhibitions. The internship will provide valuable insight into the organization of group exhibitions, working with artists and galleries and the curatorial process. Applicants should have a thorough understanding of contemporary art and gallery practices.

Administrative: The administrative intern will assist in the management of the day-to-day operations of the organization. This position will provide great experience in understanding the operations of a nonprofit organization. Applicants should be detail-oriented and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheets, etc).

Residency: The residency intern will work directly with the artists-in-residence as well as in the organization of workshops, panels and seminars. This position will offer opportunities to assist professional artists in a structured environment and learn more about practical resources for artists. Applicants should be organized, able to manage multiple projects and be task-oriented.

Design: The design intern will help develop and produce materials related to The Luminary’s programs and events including print materials, posters, web page layout, and more. This position will provide diverse experience producing high-profile materials in a variety of areas. Applicants should be able to work with clients, have previous design experience and a fluent knowledge of design software.

Internship Application

Days and Hours

Interns must be able to work a minimum of two days per week/seven hours per day and must be able to work a full term. The exact schedule will vary for each position.

Eligibility

All interested individuals over the age of 18 are eligible to apply for an internship. Qualifications vary for each intern position and some positions may require college or graduate training and/or professional experience

When making your arrangements, please keep in mind that internships are unpaid.

Application Procedure

Interns must submit an intern application form a resume and a cover letter (you may upload these below). We will notify selected interns of acceptance at least two weeks before the start of each cycle.

Internship Terms and application deadlines

January 15-June 15 (application deadline December 1)

June 1-September 1 (application deadline April 30)

August 15-December 31 (application deadline July 3)

    Keep in mind that our regular hours are 12p-6p Wednesday-Saturday but we are regularly open late for programs and special events.

    Students interested in earning academic credit for a Luminary internship should understand that they are responsible for making the necessary arrangements with their academic or department advisor.

    The Luminary Intern Agreement

    I understand that as a Luminary intern, I will not be entitled to monetary compensation for the work that I perform or be entitled to worker's compensation in the event of personal injury.

    The Luminary reserves the right to periodically evaluate and terminate intern services should my responsibilities not be fulfilled to satisfaction.
