In conjunction with AV*Artist Equipment Library, the Luminary is offering an exciting schedule of workshops led by local professionals to participants of all skill levels. Workshops are offered at a discounted rate for AV members, according to membership level.

Instructor: Chris Corsano with New Music Circle

Class: Free Percussion Workshop
Synopsis: Chris Corsano will present a free workshop on percussion and extended technique in advance of his performance for the New Music Circle at the Kranzberg Art Center. The legendary percussionist has performed with the likes of Bjork, Yoko Ono, Nels Cline and Sonic Youth.

Date: Saturday, January 28th from 12-2pm.

Class: TMI: 20 Topics for Success on the Web
Synopsis: This workshop will allocate 10 minutes per topic on a wide range of subjects that are crucial for web publishing success and improved visibility online. Instructor will be “working against” a countdown timer for each topic. When “time is up”, the class must move on to the next topic. This will be a fast paced, high-energy roundtable. Topics include search engine optimization, web publishing platforms (wordpress, tumblr,etc.), preparing and optimizing media for web, effective social media usage, design and development shortcuts / strategies, and much more. Lecture will also be broadcast live on the web and a forum will be provided for offsite participants to contribute and interact.

The Books are one of the most revered and influential instrumental acts of the last decade, weaving enigmatic narratives through interlocking melodic themes into what cannot be described as anything short of breathtaking. The band will be making a rare live appearance in an environment set up specially for the performance in our contemporary gallery space.

With a cut-and-paste musical aesthetic, The Books, a.k.a. Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong, did not invent the audio collage, but they have perfected the idea of incorporating found sound into their music. The result is kind less-is-more future-fold, cliche-free and miraculously organic.

Openers Lymbyc Systym  is an instrumental duo comprised of brothers Mike and Jared Bell. Hailing from Austin, Texas and Brooklyn, NY respectively, the pair began tinkering back in 2001, laboriously experimenting and completely hellbent on establishing something fresh and unique from deep beneath the indie canopy. The have most recently toured with Broken Social Scene and This Will Destroy You and are known as one of the most engaging live acts emerging today.

When We Build, Let Us Think That We Build Forever is a curated group show focused on the intersection of natural and manmade environments. Ranging from ecological experiments to meditations on the precariousness of our built environment, the exhibit presents a poetic view of the world that surrounds us and our effect on it. When We Build… features the work of primarily St. Louis-based artists, giving a local viewpoint and immediacy to the exhibit.

The exhibit brings together a broad base of St. Louis artists, from the internationally recognized work of Peter Marcus to the emerging work of Brea McAnally, BJ Vogt, Jessica Kiel-Wornson and Christine D’Epiro. Peter Marcus will contribute several pieces from his striking Horsehead series (provided by Bruno David Gallery) that focus on a single Victorian house “emblematic of an America-or, at least, the idea—of an America that has ceased to exist.” Brea, who also curated the exhibit, has created an interactive outdoor cityscape that invites viewers to add water to an adjacent dam that will, at some point in the evening, overflow and flood the city. The work is a ambivalent exploration of the role of man in natural disaster, inviting questions of implication and responsibility.

They are joined by Luminary Resident Artist Christine D’Epiro, who is transforming brown paper grocery bags into a room-sized installation depicting a nightscape.  Entitled Night, the exhibition responds to our present shared economic situation with imagery that represents both a conclusion and a cyclical occurrence. B.J. Vogt is also contributing sculptural pieces depicting ‘natural’ environments or settings using mass produced or easily replicated ‘man-made’ materials, such as cardboard, PVC pipes, plastic implements, lamps and other electrical devices.

The opening reception took place on Saturday, August 8th from 6-9pm and will remain on view on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2-7pm and on Saturdays from 12-5pm through the end of September.

We are now accepting applications for our Summer MFA/BFA Program and for Fall, 2011.

The Luminary’s residency program is a part of our extensive interaction with the landscape of contemporary art. We seek to promote and support exceptional emerging artists by providing a creative environment in which to work, well-equipped studios, an individually structured professional development program, and dedicated financial support. Each resident gains access to resources as diverse as an art and literature library, basic woodworking shop, digital editing equipment, video filming and production equipment, studio lighting, and exhibition space.
