Like rich velvet hijabs or gold threaded abayas. Luxury as understood by the modest. Shabazz Palaces. If Bedouins herded beats instead of goats and settled in Seattle instead of the Atlas Mountains, this would be their album. Forward thinkers but nostalgic for a sparer time when ancient astronomers only recognized five planets. Hip hop. Black light uses electromagnetic radiation to eradicate microorganisms, but shabazz didn’t come to kill a sound, just to shine their own incandescent lamp on this. Hear. Hard and clear. Fifty thousand years in the making. Honorable.palaceer pink gators.

On March 27th, The Luminary presents The Hive Dwellers, the latest project of the legendary K Records and Beat Happening founder Calvin Johnson. The Hive Dwellers is a band, a combo (as in combination) of disparate individuals who share a common love of rock’n’roll, library cards and railroad travel. The assorted cacophony of membership slides around, and currently includes Gabriel Will and Evan Hashi. In 2012, the Hive Dwellers will be releasing a new LP and touring extensively through the US. As the future unfolds into the conscious mind and continues to fade gently into the past, the Hive Dwellers are present tense, bearing witness to the maraca wilderness of the modern Basement State. This is an all-ages show.

The Luminary Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the second installment of our residency retrospective exhibition, Something Happened, which opens on Friday, February 24th from 6-9PM. Something Happened will feature work created by our artists-in-residence throughout 2011 as a way to create a dialogue between our studio and exhibition programs and further the engagement of the public in the process. The exhibition captures the explorations and experimentations that took place throughout the year, resulting in new work from each of the artists. The artists in the program represent some of the most exceptional artists working in the region and include Aaron Bos-Wahl, Jessi Cerutti, Alex Elmestad, Kristin Fleischmann, Dani Kantrowitz, Katie McCullough, Daniel McGrath, Ann-Maree Walker and David Weinberg.

Something Happened will remain on view Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 12-6PM and Thursdays from 11AM-6PM each week through March 31st, 2012.

The Luminary’s exhibitions are generously supported by the Arts and Education Council and the Missouri Arts Council.

The Luminary has announced a capital campaign to purchase a 22,500 sq/ft former variety store at 2700 Cherokee Street and rehab it into an cutting-edge incubator for art, music and cultural projects. The building will include expanded gallery and venue space, housing and studios for artists-in-residence, open work space for the artist equipment library, classrooms, offices and creative retail.

The Luminary’s Directors, James and Brea McAnally, describe the move as “an investment in the growing potential of the St. Louis creative community.” The campaign’s slogan-New ideas use old buildings- underscores The Luminary’s commitment to the next wave of the arts in the area. They mark the importance of Cherokee street as well, stating that “the Cherokee arts district is one of the most promising communities in the region- it is a diverse urban neighborhood that is already home to many artists, musicians and creative entrepreneurs. At the same time, it is a tenuous region in which we feel like we can play a role in creating a stable future within the community.” The plans have elicited wide support from the community after initial discussions with business owners and residents of the street. Mayor Francis Slay has lent his support to the ambitious project, saying that “The Luminary’s mission enables artists to grow and refine their talents, helping to ensure the future growth of St. Louis’s creative class. I stand in support of their organization as they work to raise the necessary funds to make this a reality.”

OPEN CALLS FOR 2012 INSTALLATION PROPOSALS

The Luminary Center for the Arts is a nonprofit contemporary arts organization based in St. Louis, MO. The Luminary seeks to provide meaningful support to emerging artists, audiences and appreciators in the St. Louis area. As a combined studio, education, and exhibition space, we bring together a conversation from all areas of the art world, encouraging creative engagement with contemporary art production and processes.

The Luminary invites artists and curators to submit proposals for site-specific installations to be realized in our dedicated Installation Space throughout 2012. The 500 sq. ft. space is a renovated former chapel with 20 ft vaulted ceilings and natural light. Each artist accepted will have up to two weeks to install the work. Accepted artists will be allowed to utilize installation hardware and resources including video and projection equipment, woodshop, audio equipment and more. All selected artists will receive a small stipend for materials and other expenses. Out of town artists selected will be given the option to participate in the residency program as well.

The installation will be featured in conjunction with a show in our main gallery space and the general public will be allowed access to the work Wed-Sat from 12-6PM. Each project will remain up for six weeks from the date of the opening, and at the end of the designated period of display the artist will be asked to give an artist talk about his/her work and practice for a local audience. The Luminary serves as an incubator of new ideas and proposals with an innovative, interactive and experimental approach will be given priority.

GUIDELINES

• Proposals must be emailed to info@theluminaryarts.com no later than December 20, 2011. Emailed submissions should use ‘Installation Proposal 2012’ as the subject line. Physical submissions will also be considered and may be mailed to 4900 Reber Place, St. Louis, MO 63139.
