The Luminary | Center for the Arts, in conjunction with the Partnership for Downtown, is pleased to present a free monthly performance series entitled Post to be held once per month in the summer of 2010 at the Old Post Office Plaza. The Post Performances will pair some of the best local visual artists and musical performers to create site-specific, one-time performances with the goal of creating a platform encouraging collaboration among the local visual and performing art cultures, highlighting emerging talent in the region and promoting the artistic environment of the Plaza. The first installment will take place on Saturday, May 22nd from 7-9pm pairing local standouts Theodore with the large-scale sculpture of BJ Vogt.

Theodore, whose recently-released album Hold You Like a Lover has been featured nationally in magazines such as Paste, is one of the area’s most creative and engaging live bands. They will be performing amidst a large installation by BJ Vogt called A Human Geology. Originally created for the Schmidt Art Center, A Human Geology stands over 12 feet tall and will create a monolithic structure to accentuate Theodore’s naturalistic lyrics and Americana sound. The performance is free and open to the public.

On October 6th, we welcome the off-kilter campfire singalongs of rising stars Suckers along with locals Cold Bear Scout for our 7th installation of the Elevator Music Series.

Suckers merged as the sound and aesthetic of three one-man bands playing together. Pan, Quinn and Austin each played multiple instruments per song: singing, shouting and chanting in unison. The trio knew they were missing something or someone, and thankfully, that person arrived in drummer/keyboardist Brian Aiken, fresh off a year abroad in Hungary. Once Brian was on board, the band hit their stride, packing local venues and sharing bills with friends and kindred spirits in Yeasayer, MGMT, Dragons Of Zynth, Chairlift, Kyp Malone and Awesome Color, among others. Their heralded live performances feature group singing, primal beats, future sounds, Serbian interpretive dancers, trumpet blasts, religious truths and sheer enjoyment.

Tickets: $8adv/$10dos available online at Brown Paper Tickets.

Purchase tickets in advance at Brown Paper Tickets for $12 or $15 day of show. The show is expected to sell out, so we encourage pre-ordering early!

The Books are one of the most revered and influential instrumental acts of the last decade, weaving enigmatic narratives through interlocking melodic themes into what cannot be described as anything short of breathtaking. The band will be making a rare live appearance in an environment set up specially for the performance in our contemporary gallery space.

With a cut-and-paste musical aesthetic, The Books, a.k.a. Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong, did not invent the audio collage, but they have perfected the idea of incorporating found sound into their music. The result is kind less-is-more future-fold, cliche-free and miraculously organic.

Openers Lymbyc Systym is an instrumental duo comprised of brothers Mike and Jared Bell. Hailing from Austin, Texas and Brooklyn, NY respectively, the pair began tinkering back in 2001, laboriously experimenting and completely hellbent on establishing something fresh and unique from deep beneath the indie canopy. The have most recently toured with Broken Social Scene and This Will Destroy You and are known as one of the most engaging live acts emerging today.
