On Sunday, October 2nd, The Luminary welcomes Oneohtrix Point Never (aka Daniel Lopatin) to the Elevator Music Series. OPN is the experimental electronic project of Daniel Lopatin, who is also known for his work with 80′s synth revivalists GAMES. Raglani and Kevin Harris will open the show.

On Friday, October 28th, The Luminary welcomes Eleanor Friedberger (of The Fiery Furnaces) to the Elevator Music Series. As half of The Fiery Furnaces, Friedberger has become one of the most acclaimed and engaging voices in contemporary music. In her first solo effort, she has created an album as accessible and immediate as any in her career. We hear the show is just as good too.

POST PERFORMANCE 3: High Places

August 20th, 2011 from 6-10pm at the Old Post Office Plaza

For the second year in a row The Luminary Center for the Arts and the Partnership for Downtown presents the Post Performances, a free monthly performance series to be held once a month in the summer of 2011 at the Old Post Office Plaza. The Post Performances will pair innovative visual artists and musicians to create site-specific, one-time performances that are free and open to the public.

Post Performance 3.11 will feature the evocative and engaging soundscapes of High Places. Since its inception, High Places has created a signature sound out of using bass-heavy, yet crisp beats, lilting vocal melodies, syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of household objects. Locals Ra Cailum and US English will open.

Artist Carlie Trosclair will be creating a new site-specific installation using textiles and lighting to engage with the unique architecture of the Old Post Office Plaza.

The performance is FREE, all ages and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring seating and are welcome to bring food and drinks to the event (no glass please).

POST PERFORMANCE 4: My Brightest Diamond

September 11, 2011 from 7-10pm at the Old Post Office Plaza

For the second year in a row The Luminary Center for the Arts and the Partnership for Downtown presents the Post Performances, a free monthly performance series to be held once a month in the summer of 2011 at the Old Post Office Plaza. The Post Performances will pair innovative visual artists and musicians to create site-specific, one-time performances that are free and open to the public.

Post Performance 4 features a special solo show by My Brightest Diamond. As impressive as her list of recent collaborators, Shara Worden’s voice and arresting live performances have left audiences thunderstruck from the Sydney Opera House to Lincoln Center.  She’s performed under the experimental-pop moniker My Brightest Diamond for the last seven years, and counts Bryce Dessner (The National), Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), David Byrne, Laurie Anderson and The Decemberists among friends and fans. They are just a few of the many who’ve fallen in love with Worden’s mystical voice and mythic storytelling. Worden’s artistry seems to transcend music itself. On stage she evokes as much Martha Graham as Edith Piaf, and can be found collaborating with visual artists (Matthew Ritchie) and filmmakers (Matthew Barney, Murat Eyuboglu) alike. Where worlds are colliding, there is a Shara; a zeitgeist for a growing movement of experimental musicians eager to bend the borders of artistry and genre.Visual artist for this event is TBA.

We have begun hosting intimate, experimental shows upstairs in the Studio and Installation Space. The space has vaulted 20′ ceilings, gorgeous natural reverb and is ideal for small, direct experiences with musicians and performers. Combining the attributes of a studio–experimentation, process, communication–with the comfortable environment of a kitchen, library and meeting space, these shows are meant to connect live performance with a broader dialogue of art and music.

July 21: US English Quailskin (COMO) and Daydream Lullaby. Part of the US English-curated GOLDEN C/AGE CONCERTS. The show will begin with a discussion on The State of Sound: How Musicians Make (It). Beginning the show with a discussion will open up a dialogue that will carry over into the performance of three engaging and experimental musicians who have taken various approaches in releasing their music. 7pm. $5 

July 22: Dots Not Feathers + Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra + Boy Without God. 8pm. $7

On September 26th, The Luminary welcomes Deerhoof and Sleepy Kitty to the Elevator Music Series. Deerhoof has become one of the most influential and exciting indie bands over their 20 year history and are known for their unpredictable and ecstatic live shows. They will be joined by local standouts Sleepy Kitty, whose own pop collages will be on view.

July 9th will feature an impressive collection of local DJs and hip hop collaborators, namely, Safety Words, Jay Fay, and Adult Fur, performing alongside a new site-specific sculpture by artist Andrew Woodard. Woodard will be creating a monumental sculpture based on the design of the Eames RAR rocking chair, abstracting and expanding on the legendary design.

The performance is FREE, all ages and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring seating and are welcome to bring food and drinks to the event (no glass please).

On July 1st at 8pm, The Luminary will host a special performance upstairs by NewVillager and US English as a part of the US English-curated GOLDEN C/AGE CONCERTS in which they pair installations and innovative sounds together each show. NewVillager is a band/art collective from San Francisco and NYC that will be returning from a tour with Okkervil River and Titus Andronicus.

On July 4th, The Luminary presents a special show with of Montreal as a part of the monthly Elevator Music Series. Of Montreal will perform in the intimate gallery space at The Luminary in this unique opportunity to see the band in the kind of creative setting the band is most at home in.

It has been said that an original artist is not a person who emulates no one, but rather is somebody that no one can emulate. Over the last fifteen years, of Montreal has imitated everyone (86 covers and counting), while developing its own inimitable sound — a unique mixture of indie-pop, glam-rock, funk, and R&B. What we are saying is this is a better way to celebrate independence than brats and bottle rockets in your backyard.

Athens, Georgia-based pop duo Yip Deceiver will open the show.
