On April 13th, Matthew Paul Isaacson will open Cherry Dance, a new site-specific installation consisting of hundreds of Maraschino Cherries suspended from a monofilament grid. The piece was conceptualized from the artist’s childhood experience of working and living on a 1,500 acre industrial fruit manufacturing farm in Northern Michigan. The primary crops were several varieties of cherries and apples to produce concentrate, along with an abundant production of various colors of maraschino cherries. The installation will fill the space with the fruit’s sensory sugar high, the preserved, sweetened cherries aging over the course of the exhibition. Pulling various strings around the space will set the grid of cherries in motion, creating a kinetic work that echoes the exuberance of childhood, as well as engaging unstable questions of economy, memory and preservation.

Cherry Dance opens from 6-9pm on April 13th and will remain on view Wednesday through Saturday from 12-6pm through May 11th.

Opening Reception on April 13th from 6-9pm

On Friday, April 13th from 6-9pm, The Luminary presents ˚ (read as: “Degree”), a two person exhibition featuring Andrew James and Stephen Cartwright. Both James and Cartwright track and translate external measurements such as the weather, latitude and longitude, travel and other phenomena, creating evocative sculptural and video work that echoes the increasing effect of data on our understanding of our environment.

Andrew James

Born in Knoxville,TN, Andrew James received his MFA from UC Berkeley in 2003. He relocated to St. Louis in 2004. In 2008 he opened Good Citizen Gallery and Billboard project, which has taken over his life for the last 3 years. Previously he has shown his work at The Foundry Arts Center, Applebee Gallery at MacMurray College and in group shows at The St. Louis Artist Guild, St. Charles Community College, and The National Ornamental Metals Museum in Memphis. He has a love/hate relationship with repetition.

Stephen Cartwright

Since June 21, 1999, Stephen Cartwright has recorded the exact latitude, longitude and elevation of his position on the earth every hour. From the data, he creates virtual maps in three dimensions; they grow hour by hour, point by point. The maps plot his position relative to space, time, elevation and other factors. This exploration informs his sculpture: stills, tangencies and abstractions culled from the original data. Much of his work illustrates where he has been, but he is also interested in the space that surrounds his recorded course. That unknown space contains endless possibilities of experience through space and time. Cartwright’s practice highlights the divergence of natural and man-made laws and systems, and perception versus fact. The world is more complex than an individual can comprehend, but the artist attempts to gain some understanding through tentative forays over the surface.

Cartwright has previously exhibited at the Leviton A+D Gallery at Columbia College in Chicago, the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, and the DUMBO Arts Center.
