2009 Poetry Scores Art Invitational

The 2009 Poetry Scores Art Invitational on Friday, Nov. 13 at The Luminary | Center for the Artsright. Poetry Scores is a local arts organization that translates poetry into other media.  The main medium is the poetry score- a long poem set to music as one scores a film. At the CD release party for the finished score, an art auction will take place, contributing artists having made work that both responds to the poem and is titled after a verbatim quote from the poem. This year’s Invitational is devoted to the poem “The Sydney Highrise Variations” by the Australian poet Les Murray.

All work will be sold that night at The Luminary on silent auction, with proceeds split three ways between artist, venues and Poetry Scores, a Missouri nonprofit corporation dedicated to translating poetry into other media.

Arts in the Midwest Panel Discussion

On Thursday, October 1st, we will host the first Arts and Activism in the Midwest Panel Discussion from 7-9pm. We will be connected to panelists in Chicago and Detroit for this exciting and enlightening opportunity.

“Arts and Activism in the Midwest” is an ongoing forum which happens four times in 2009 and 2010. Each event involves Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit. The purposes of the “Arts & Activism in the Midwest” series include:

  • discussion about strengths and challenges regarding independently run arts, education, and activism efforts throughout the Midwest region — in relation to the cities, towns, and rural areas in which they exist
  • ideas about opening up more communication & setting up possible collaborations between organizations and individual artists living in different Midwestern cities
  • discussion regarding cultural dynamics in Midwestern cities (relations with legislators, community involvement, funding opportunities, etc.)
