SUMMER 2011 RESIDENT ARTISTS

Jessi Cerutti

A native of St. Louis, MO, Jessi Cerutti earned her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Missouri Saint Louis, followed by an MFA in Printmaking from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Cerutti was drawn to print and papermaking through a fascination with the effect of process on the outcome of the work.

Cerutti’s most recent work explores the exploration of history through memory and the process of developing paper from raw fibers.  Intangible Rivers: A Subjective History was exhibited at the Zeigenhein Gallery in Saint Louis, MO as part of the SGC International Conference of 2011. Her past works have been shown at venues such as the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, IL and the Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, OH as well as multiple St. Louis galleries and venues.

During her time at the Luminary, Jessi will practice both paper-pulp painting and paper casting in combination with her well-practiced printmaking techniques to develop new compositional and sculptural ideas, referencing landscape, memory and time in both fictional and historical contexts.

When not in the studio experimenting with paper pulp Jessi can be found spinning records at various parties and bars, organizing the Rock-N-Roll Craft Show, or teaching paper and printmaking workshops around town.

Kara Hayes

Hailing from the Midwest, photographer Kara Hayes documents everyday life through vibrant portraiture.  Receiving her BFA in Photography from Columbia College in Chicago along with minors in both graphic design and psychology, Hayes interconnects both the personal struggle of self-identity and photography through her realistic portraits.

Hayes has worked as an art instructor, private tutor, and is currently an instructor at the Turner Center for the Arts in Maplewood, MO. Her photographs have appeared in Chicago based VENUSZINEMagazine, UR Chicago Magazine and the Chicago Reader.

As of late, her work reveals the hidden inner struggles of families of traumatic and distressing life-changes.  Drawing from her own family’s complex and silent testimonies, Hayes allows viewers to further engage themselves through her experience, memory and testimony.

Currently, Hayes is seeking to explore documentary portraiture even further, by adapting a multi-media, multi-layered approach to her already vibrant photographs and adding reference to vintage techniques. If she isn’t behind a camera or light stand in the studio, you can find her in her office among thrift store relics and well-tended plants with a big smile on her face and energy to spare!

Katie McCullough

Originally from Georgia, painter Katie McCullough explores both two dimensional design and installation through abstract painting.  She received her BFA in painting from the University of Georgia, followed by an MFA in Visual Arts from Washington University in St. Louis.

Through the manipulation of spatial surroundings, her site-responsive paintings seek to imitate the ephemerality of perception. Exploring both the gestural structure of painting and line, her work is formed through unexpected visualization and discovery.

While at the Luminary, McCullough hopes to further explore the combination of installation and painterly techniques within the intimate setting of her studio, repeatedly transforming the space.

David Weinberg

As a radio producer, David Weinberg has spent the last several years working  for a number of community and National Public Radio affiliates as well as several national radio shows including Marketplace, Hearing Voices and Studio 360.

As an Artist in Residence at The Studio at Colton in New Orleans, LA, David founded the youth radio program “Ya Heard Me,” a live radio show which taught youths between the ages of twelve to twenty-two how to produce radio stories using tape recorders, basic narrative writing skills, and digital editing software.

In March of 2011, he collaborated with artist Tim Garrett for a project entitled SonicBooth. This project combines photography with sound as the vintage photo booth records sound as the photos are being taken. The project continues with the curation of the works of several other artists’ slideshows that were made in the booth.

During his residency at The Luminary, David will complete Sonic St. Louis, an interactive sound map of the St. Louis region. David is currently seeking “sound finders” to help collect the unique sounds that make up the neighborhoods of St. Louis, so if you are reading this and are “within earshot”, contact him at (radio.weinberg@gmail.com) and become a collaborator!
