One can argue that the beauty supply, as its own unique ecosystem, is one of the first “art stores” young Black women encounter: creativity oozes from these spaces. Your ego is the canvas and the materials are bundles, BoBos, and Blue Magic.

Watching the hope and desperation as women flock in and out of the beauty supply on a Friday night is something to marvel at, something to admire. This place houses beauty. It supplies it to a community. The bougie ghetto girl aesthetic has been breached by the fashion world for decades and will continue to be. They want the confidence and the creativity that is bred within the walls of the beauty supply. Passed down from grandma to mamma to auntie to sister girl to sis to friend. You can find protection there - “protect those ends hunny” - wrapping your hair up in a satin bonnet. They supply relaxers, edge control, and deep conditioning, conditioning you to believe all these products are made to promote “Black Beauty.”

Mane 'n Tail is an exhibition curated by Katherine Simóne Reynolds that investigates the intersectionality of this beauty exchange: How the Beauty Supply manipulates the way women of color feel about themselves, as well as the relationship between the purchasers of beauty and the people and spaces that supply it.

Participating artists include LaKela Brown, Pamela Council, Baseera Khan, Abigail Lucien, Narcissister, Yvonne Osei, Katherine Simóne Reynolds, SHENEQUA, Diamond Stingily, and Rachel Youn.

DJ set during the opening reception by Agile One.
