KNOW/HOW: books + print is a bookshop and communal publication studio located inside of The Luminary that houses large and small press editions of artist books, poetry, fiction, dissent, cultural work and criticism. Our soft opening is on Saturday, June 5th from 11 am - 4pm.

KNOW/HOW: books + print is a bookshop and communal publication studio located inside of The Luminary that houses large and small press editions of artist books, poetry, fiction, dissent, cultural work and criticism. KNOW/HOW offers a communal space within The Luminary with supported programming such as readings and teaching events, and resources to encourage slowed down engagement with art, ideas and each other, including seating, meeting space, and a forthcoming open-source zine library.

The shop is built to support and uplift the work of independent presses and small publishers, while offering relevant supplemental research materials from larger distributors. To preserve a commitment to small publishing and local makers, KNOW/HOW accepts rolling submissions for consignment and will offer bookmaking workshops and print tutorials throughout the year. A Xerox copy machine will be available for low-cost printing on demand.

In this spirit, we are opening KNOW/HOW with a casual launch event on June 5th, from 11a-4p at 2701 Cherokee St. :-) There will be light refreshments and bakery goods served behind the bar for outside enjoyment (weather permitting). We will be selling books all day inside the shop. Purchasing a book or donating at the cafe (which will be open for pop-ups) raises funds for the studio’s future programs and allows us to purchase more incredible, inspiring books. If you can’t make it in person, a special selection of books are available online now!

After the launch, KNOW/HOW will be open during regular operating hours of The Luminary for in-person browsing and is also available to book as a small event space. The studio will be open for drop-in use on posted days. Details on costs for DIY Printing and the link to appointments can be found on our website.

This space is built on a model that is supported by and for the larger local creative community and outward. It relies on participation to make it strong and make it last. It is our dream to create a marker for gathering, sharing, and mutual support through print and pedagogy in St. Louis.

Thank you for supporting KNOW/HOW and the dream to make space around books and each other. We’re looking forward to seeing you again soon, either now or in the future!
