Fall 2024 at The Luminary: Soo Shin, (An) Anthology of the Ocean
The Luminary Announces Fall Exhibition with Chicago based Conceptual Artist, Soo Shin
9.3.2024
This debut presentation, which spans sculpture, drawings, and sound, will be on view from October 11 - December 14 at The Luminary
The Luminary is pleased to present (An) Anthology of the Ocean, a solo exhibition by Chicago-based conceptual artist Soo Shin.
Centered around the personhood of a body, Shin’s work composes metaphoric bodily gestures and the encapsulation of their traces. Her process originates with written poetry, using ceramic, brass, concrete, wood, seawater, and other materials from personal events to render the realities of belonging, distance, loss, longing, and communion with others. (An) Anthology of the Ocean offers a distilled collection of Shin’s artistic practice over the last decade, debuting new works made in collaboration with the Pacific Ocean earlier this year.
(An) Anthology of the Ocean is curated by Kalaija Mallery, with support from Kellen Wright (Gallery Manager), Kevin Harris (Fabrication and Tech), and Jesse Johanning (Designer). The exhibition’s conceptual framework is further enriched by the contributions of poet Amy Lam and Amanda Walters, whose words have served as a guiding force throughout its development.
The opening reception, scheduled for October 11 from 6-9 pm, will offer a unique opportunity for visitors to engage directly with the artist and her deeply resonant works. This event, free and open to the public, marks the first of many free engagements throughout the duration of this exhibition. Stay tuned for more events at theluminaryarts.com/public-programs.

About The Artist
Soo Shin (b. 1981, Seoul) is an artist based in Chicago whose work poetically engages with the metaphysical dimensions of bodily presence and absence. Through an interdisciplinary practice that bridges sculpture, drawing, and sound, Shin employs a diverse range of materials—ceramic, brass, concrete, wood, and seawater—to evoke themes of corporeal connection, spatial displacement, and existential longing. Her artistic approach is deeply intertwined with her background in poetry, which serves as a foundation for her exploration of personal and collective narratives.
Shin’s career is distinguished by numerous prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Djerassi Artist Residency, Woodside, CA; the Illinois Arts Council; and the Vilcek Foundation at MacDowell. Her work has been exhibited in prominent venues such as Patron Gallery, Goldfinch Gallery, and the Chicago Manual Style. Additional residencies at institutions including the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, Vermont Studio Center, Art Farm, and Ox-box have further shaped her artistic trajectory. She holds advanced degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Ewha Womans University, Seoul, where her academic background in both MFA and BFA programs has significantly informed her conceptual and material approach to art.
(An) Anthology of the Ocean is generously supported by the Teiger Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Crawford Taylor Foundation, and the Missouri Arts Council. This exhibition is part of The Luminary's ongoing series of programs that champion new artistic visions and foster critical discourse, co-creating new futures.
