Lola Ayisha Ogbara will present her performance project, Isinmi, which considers rest, stillness, and ceremony. Isinmi, in Yoruba translates to relaxation in English. While her film on view, The Perfect Servant, commemorates the invisible labor history of Black women, the performance considers Black femmes at rest, both its historic deprivation and its present necessity situation along the African diaspora. Through a score that invites spontaneity utilizing space within the gallery, performing artist, Keyierra Collins, engages in a dynamic improvisational performance that centers the importance of rest, communal reverence and ancestral veneration. Collins moves through space considering her proximities to history, labor, diasporic lineages, and the work situated in the gallery. With the curated sound from Ogbara to both initiate and cease movement, they engage in a multifarious performance of movement, rest, rejoice and all of the ambiguity in-between.
