home comings & goings: a diasp(h)oric experience

“Darkening” refers to the participation of people traditionally understood as “dark” in the formation of their own identities through imagination of internal belonging and oceanic crossing. It invokes a process or sense of envelopment, if not doom, in the ubiquitous effects of power, and simultaneously a sense of hope for a future where such thick, instrumental, and infinite selections become so full as to become ineffectual—the mirrors darkened, possibility reborn.

— Stephanie Leigh Batiste, Darkening Mirrors

Reaction, memory and dream: these are the springs of poetry.
May these poems challenge the daily language of our intercourse-

— June Jordan, SOULSCRIPT

home comings & goings: a diasp(h)oric experience, a presentation of new work by St. Louis-native keyon gaskin, resists fixed meaning in favor of process, collaboration, and live construction. Working across movement, sound, light, and presence, gaskin builds a unique performance environment staged in The Luminary’s main galleries, shaped in real time through ensemble practice and improvisation. The work unfolds through relation – between performers, materials, and audience – allowing space for radical transformation, rather than interpretation.

During their St. Louis residency, gaskin will cast an ensemble of local Black performers, including sound artists, visual artists, and classically trained dancers. Through workshops and rehearsals, the group will develop the performance collectively culminating in two public presentations at The Luminary on March 20 & 22 at 7 PM.

Tickets are on sale now, with sliding-scale pay-what-you-can options available for both evenings.
