 The Luminary is seeking a full-time Gallery Director starting in 2021.

The Luminary is a leading independent space based in St. Louis, MO that presents path-breaking platforms for artistic futures across a range of activities, including exhibitions, residencies, mutual support efforts, publications such as MARCH: a journal of art & strategy, a range of public projects, as well as the large-scale Counterpublic Triennial.

We are actively looking for a leader-collaborator, a visionary curator and organizer, a connector with neighbors and advocate for artists to support the organization as the director of our gallery programming and operations.

As the artistic and administrative leader for The Luminary’s on-site programming, the Gallery Director will work closely with the Executive Director, Board and staff to oversee on-site curatorial scope, artistic and educational programs, develop and manage program budgets, assist with fundraising and development efforts, marketing and communications, and co-lead strategic orientation related to the organization’s operations at 2701 Cherokee and assist with these efforts in interrelated programs.

This role will remain open until filled, with a strong preference for applicants to start in the first quarter of 2021. Applications will be reviewed as received.

About the Position
This full-time, 40 hour per week role will oversee the programs and operations of the organization’s building located at 2701 Cherokee Street including exhibitions, residencies, studios, art book shop, and other initiatives, as well as supporting curatorial and editorial projects beyond the space.

Primary responsibilities include overseeing and implementing 3-4 visionary, responsive, and engaging exhibitions per season along thematic arcs; organizing and facilitating an active international residency program for up to 24 participants per season; collaboratively overseeing studio rentals and residents; co-managing the Futures Fund Regranting Program; co-managing an art book shop and publication studio; and leading responsive public programming for a culturally, racially, and economically diverse neighborhood in St. Louis, MO.

The Gallery Director will work closely with Executive and Development staff to manage a regular roster of grant applications for program support and oversee 1-2 annual fundraisers. Foundationally, the Gallery Director will lead community efforts, connecting with our neighbors and constituents to co-determine programming and operations to foreground the organization’s position as a neighbor, collaborator, and civic participant.

Key responsibilities of the Director include:
Exhibitions, Residencies & Public Programming: Conceptualize and draft proposals for exhibitions, residencies, lectures, events, and public programming, and implement all approved programs; build audience for programs through communications, marketing and engagement; ensure the cooperation of supporters and neighbors to successfully realize plans; maintain an active roster of calendar of exhibitions and public programs that equally engage immediate and international communities.

Financial Management: Assume day-to-day fiscal responsibility for operations and calendar of programs; prepare and manage annual program budgets; review and approve payables and receivables.

Fundraising: Organize and implement with Board of Directors and Executive Director The Luminary’s annual benefit event(s); additional fundraising through grants, donations, memberships, special events, programming, etc.; research and prepare grants, and support grant-writing process in collaboration with Executive Director and staff.

Experience + Hours
Three years or more of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience overseeing a visual art space or platform is strongly preferred. Strong writing skills and an ability to connect and communicate with artists, collaborators and diverse constituents is essential. BIPOC applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Schedule
A typical schedule is Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 5pm with additional days and evenings as needed. However, hours vary and include evenings, weekends, and possible holidays. Hours will be subject to change seasonally.
Hours: This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position.
Pay: $45,000 per year plus benefits.

The Gallery Director will work alongside the full-time Manager and will report directly to the Executive Director, working alongside a small but active staff and team of volunteers.
