About The Exhibition

The “Father Figures Heartfelt Legacy’ Exhibit is an extension of the 3rd Annual Father Figures Photo Fundraiser by Tyler Small in partnership with The Village Path to support their mission to increase awareness, access, and acceptance of mental wellness within Black communities. The exhibit highlights the importance of mental health, fatherhood, and community. It features prompts for internal work, photography by Tyler Small of Father Figures and their loved ones, a community affirmation wall, and much more. All artwork will be available for purchase at The Luminary’s shop.

Legacies can be more than what we leave behind; they can be what we instill in the moments we make along the way.

About Tyler Small

Tyler Small hails from the vibrant city of St. Louis, Missouri, where his journey as a photographer, artist, father, and digital producer has been deeply rooted in his commitment to exploring the significance of fatherhood and healing within the black community.

Growing up between North County (Kinloch and Castle Point) and South City, Tyler developed a keen eye for capturing the essence of life through his lens. His photography reflects his experiences and hopes as a black man navigating the complexities of fatherhood which involves a lot of healing of the inner child and honoring the inner family system.

With each click of the shutter, Tyler seeks to celebrate the diverse narratives of black fatherhood. His images are imbued with a sense of intimacy and tenderness, offering viewers a glimpse into the profound bond shared between father figures and their children.

Without his own Father as a guide, Tyler fought through personal battles of being lost within the world. Thankfully, father figures like his grandfather, who could not say many words, cultivated emotional interactions that helped Tyler foster the ability and willingness to open his heart.

Beyond photography, Tyler utilizes digital art, mixed media installations, and multimedia projects to address the themes of resilience, self-discovery, and community building. These different forms of making help to capture his ideas of community and create a vision of healing and empowerment.

As a father himself, Tyler’s work is deeply personal, driven by a desire to create a world where black men are seen, heard, and valued for their contributions to family and society. He believes in the transformative power of art as a tool for healing and social change, and he is dedicated to using his platform to inspire others to embrace their journeys of self-discovery and healing. He is currently a board member and supporter of The Village Path.

Tyler Small's artistic endeavors serve as a testament to the resilience and creativity of the black community in St. Louis and beyond. Through his passion for storytelling and advocacy, he invites us to join him on a journey of reflection, connection, and healing as we collectively strive to redefine the narrative of black fatherhood in the 21st century.
